During the first stagecoach robbery in California in 1855, the Rattlesnake Dick gang captured gold dust for $80,000. In order to fight the growing number of stagecoach robbers more effectively, a special protection force was formed in 1866, the Wells Fargo Detectives. For these detectives, Samuel Colt was commissioned to manufacture a special smaller Colt, which was handier than the big 45 Colts and which the agents could also conceal better.
