The 9-shot LeMat is a percussion revolver that can also fire a shot charge via an auxiliary barrel. Due to the economic embargo of the North, the Confederacy had to resort to homegrown designs (most of the gun factories, such as Colt and Remmington, were located in the North). Colonel Dr. Jean Alexandre Francois LeMat and General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard designed this weapon in 1856. ,First manufactured in Philadelphia, production started in France after the outbreak of war and later in England. The weapons manufactured in Europe were smuggled through the Union blockades. Approximately 3,000 LeMat revolvers were manufactured until they were discontinued in 1865.
